Named after Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, one of India’s most revered civil engineers and visionary statesmen, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) was established on April 1, 1998. Recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the VTU is a member of both the Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities.
VTU is one of the biggest Technological University in India, having 144 colleges affiliated to it with
undergraduate
course in 27 disciplines and PG Programme in 66 disciplines. The intake at UG level is about 45000 students and at the PG level it is about 7500 students. The University has 14 QIP centre in various affiliated colleges and 14 extension centres for offering PG programmes. There are over 200 departments recognized as research centres. This year the University is awarding 35 Ph.D Degrees and 13 M.Sc (Engg) Degrees. The Faculty has published around 300 research publications in the year 2006-07. The University has recently started MBA and M.Tech. Programme at Belgaum with about 250 students studying in all. This year as a novel measure academic autonomy has been provided to 14 affiliated Colleges after due processes.
The University has MOU’s with various leading organisations like IBM, INTEL Asia Electronics Inc., Ingersoll-Rand ( India) Ltd., Bangalore and Microsoft. These MOU’s will help in various ways to train the faculty, conduct teachers training workshops, student projects and enable the colleges affiliated to the University to get software at a highly subsidized rate. These MOU’s will further the Technological growth of the state. Many of the industries are showing keen interest in participating in the curricular activities of the University and the University is negotiating with them for such participation.
The VTU has its Head Office at Belgaum and four Regional Offices at Bangalore, Mysore, Gulbarga and Belgaum.
In pursuance of its vision, VTU has been constantly engaged in encouraging new technology- oriented programmes for the benefit of Society at large. The VTU Executive Council, thus, formally endorsed the Post Graduate Diploma in Infrastructure Management (PGDIM) and MBA in Infrastructure Management Programmes to be offered by the University through MINDS.
