
VISVESVARAYA TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY (VTU)

Named after Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, one of India’s most revered civil engineers and visionary statesmen, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) was established on April 1, 1998. Recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the VTU is a member of both the Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities.
The VTU has jurisdiction throughout the State of Karnataka. At present, as many as 121 engineering colleges are affiliated to it. The University admits around 38,000 candidates in all every year for engineering courses at the graduate and post-graduate levels. The VTU offers B.E./ B.Tech courses in 25 branches of engineering and M.Tech courses in 54. During 2002-03, the VTU introduced a B.E Course in Bio-Technology in 21 colleges affiliated to it. In addition, the University offers MBA, MCA, M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research and Ph.D. programmes. During the current academic year, there are 249 M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research and Ph.D candidates registered with the University. They are attached to 80 Research Centres in 24 affiliated colleges.
The University’s first B.E/ B.Tech. batch consisting of about 13,000 students passed out in July 2002. The University has so far produced around 5000 post-graduates in four M.Tech., three MBA and two MCA batches.
The University has concluded MOU’s with well-known corporations like IBM, INTEL Asia Electronics Inc., Ingersoll-Rand (India) Ltd., and Microsoft for faculty training, teachers’ workshops, student projects and subsidized software. The VTU is also set to establish a state-of-the-art technical training institute, Indo-German Institute of Technology (IGIT), at Bangalore, in collaboration with a leading German corporation. Besides, the University intends to start a nodal institute for training its own staff.
The VTU has its Head Office at Belgaum and four Regional Offices at Bangalore, Mysore, Gulbarga and Belgaum.
In pursuance of its vision, VTU has been constantly engaged in encouraging new technology- oriented programmes for the benefit of Society at large. The VTU Executive Council, thus, formally endorsed the Post Graduate Diploma in Infrastructure Management (PGDIM) and MBA in Infrastructure Management Programmes to be offered by the University through MINDS.
